Shopping

In Lerwick there are two supermarkets - the Co-op and Tesco, a number of butchers including the Globe Butcher and the Blydoit Fish shop. There is also a shop in Vidlin, which is just a couple of miles from Skelberry and stocks everything as well as selling petrol. The shop is open Monday to Saturday until 5-5.30pm and then open on Sunday morning for about 2 hours from 11am.

Nearly every hamlet in Shetland has its own shop and they are a lifeline to their local communities.

In addition, there is a post office and small Co-op in Brae about 11 miles further north.

Ferry Terminals

Skjalbrei is very convenient for the ferry terminals connecting other islands. The ferry terminal at Laxo, which is close by, connects to the island of Whalsay and the ferries to the other Northern isles of Yell Fetlar and Unst are approximately twenty minutes drive further north. The ferry to the Out Skerries runs from the Vidlin marina.

The northern isles differ considerably from one another and booking the ferries is advisable before you visit. Contact details are in the Visitors Information which is in the lounge.

Eating Out

Cafes and restaurants, including those in hotels, tend to close earlier than the British mainland so it is advisable to check out opening times, particularly for last orders and you may need to make a reservation, especially at the weekends.
